Classify the drugs used in the management of cough.
1. Cough suppressants (Antitussives):
(a) Causing sedation: Codeine, Dextromethorphan, Pholcodeine, Levopropoxyphene
(b) Causing less sedation: Pipazethete, coramiphene, carbetapentane, Oxeladin, Chlophedianol, Noscapine
2. Expetorants (Muokinetics)
a. Mucolytics: Bromhexine, Ambroxol, Acetylcysteine, Carbocisteine
b. Drugs increasing bronchial secretions: Ammonium chloride, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Iodide, Guaiphenesin (Glyceryl guaiacolate), Vasaka, Balsum of Tolu
c. Antihistamines: Chlorpheniramine, Diphenhydramine, Promethazine, Levocetrizine, Fexofenadine
3. Pharyngeal demulcents:(Soothening/Mucoprotective/Wetting):
Syrups, Glycerine, Linctuses, Menthol, Liquorice
4. Others: Drugs useful by other mechanisms
a. Local anesthetics: Benzonatate, Levodropropizine and Nebulised lignocaine
b. Bronchodilators: Terbutaline, Salbutamol, Levsalbutamol, Ipratropium
c. Prokinetics: Pantoprazole, Lansoprazole, Rabeprazole
d. H2 blockers: Ranitidine, Famotidine
e. Glucocorticoids: Dexamethasone, Betamethasone, Prednisone
f. Decongestants: Phenylpropanolamine, Phenylephrine, Pseudoephedrine
